Guildford Choral offers exciting opportunities to work with major orchestras and soloists as well as other choirs.
Guildford Choral promotes some of its own concerts but is pleased to receive regular invitations to sing with other musical groups.
We have worked on a number of projects with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. These have included performances (by invitation of RPO) with Goldsmith's Choral Union in the Royal Albert Hall under the baton of Brian Wright; November 2011 - Vaughan Williams' Sea Symphony, June 2013 - Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and March 2014 - Elgar's Dream of Gerontius.
In February 2005 we jointly promoted a very successful Mozart concert at the Royal Festival Hall with them. In October 2007 we released a CD - Vaughan Williams' Hodie under the Naxos Label working once again with RPO.
We were delighted to join the Philharmonia Orchestra to celebrate our Vice-President, Humphrey Burton's 70th birthday by performing the Verdi Requiem under his baton in a gala concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 2001. More recently, in March 2009, the Philharmonia Orchestra joined us for a concert of Mozart and Haydn in Guildford Cathedral.
We regularly perform with the Hanover Band, one of the finest period instrument orchestras in the world, most recently in Handel's Israel in Egypt (Nov 2013).
We collaborated on a number of occasions with the former Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra by jointly promoting concerts with them. Our concert with them in March 2008 brought Beethoven's Der glorreiche Augenblick to life for the Guildford audience - the first time in more than 50 years that the piece had been performed in the UK.
Since then we have performed Verdi's Requiem (June 2009) and Elgar's Music Makers (June 2010) with them in Guildford Cathedral and Mendelssohn's Elijah in June 2012 in the G Live concert hall in Guildford.
Since the demise of Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra, we have established a regular collaboration with Southern Pro Musica, now the main provider of classical music for Guildford Borough Council and have performed with them, among other things, Tippett's Child of our Time (March 2013) and A Great and Glorious Victory (Nov 2012), a dramatisation of the Battle of Trafalgar and its aftermath, composed by our Music Director, Jonathan Willcocks.
For two successive years (2013 and 2014) we have been invited by the BBC to provide 50 singers to take part in the BBC Songs of Praise Big Sing at the Royal Albert Hall with the BBC Big Sing Orchestra conducted by Paul Leddington Wright.
In January 2010 GCS started a long term collaboration with Music of Life Foundation. This charity supports musically talented young people with disabilities and special needs providing opportunities for them to perform with professional musicians. Students supported by Music of Life join in the regular GCS rehearsals on Thursday evenings and have sung as part of the choir on the platform for concerts.
GCS members take part in workshops and other events organised by Music of Life Foundation itself including a reception at Loseley House in June 2010.
Until the end of 2008 GCS and CLC shared the same Musical Director, Hilary Davan Wetton.
Past joint concerts include our Mozart concert in the Royal Festival Hall in February 2005 and a Gala Concert in June 2002 also in the Royal Festival Hall with the BBC Concert Orchestra and in the presence of TRH The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. This concert was to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee, and was recorded for broadcast by BBC Radio 3.
