Transatlantic Harmonies, Jun 2017

This concert brings together some of the finest choral and orchestral music of the past century. Randall Thompson’s haunting unaccompanied choral setting Alleluia and Morten Lauridsen’s great choral work Lux aeterna frame Barber’s Adagio for strings – a work of beauty and reflective profundity that has the same sense of national identity in the USA that ‘Nimrod’ from Elgar’s Enigma Variations enjoys on this side of the Atlantic. The concert also features John Rutter’s Requiem – which the composer views as his most personal masterpiece and which has become the most-performed work of this prolific and admired English choral composer.
