Israel in Egypt
About this event
Enjoy Handel’s most adventurous and ambitious oratorio, full of exciting choruses and elaborate solo arias that colourfully depict the trials and tribulations of the Old Testament – rivers of blood, fire and hailstones, flies and lice – over which there is eventual glorious triumph.
The choral writing is the bedrock of this inspired setting of Old Testament narrative and is both varied and powerful, often involving double chorus. The orchestration is also vivid, with use of trombones (very unusual for Handel’s day) as well as the conventional baroque orchestral forces. A work that reveals Handel at his very best – full of drama and attractive melodic writing.
Guildford Choral Society is joined by soloists Emily Garland
, Angharad Lyddon
and Oliver Johnston
for this performance.
